... I have installed Linux 9. when Linux is booting its asks for localhost login, it comes up with "according to /var/run/gdm. pid, gdm was already running (653), but seems to have been murdered mysteriously. "
if i type ntl next to localhost login it asks for a password but it will not allow me to type in a password. Please help! What do i need to do?

There are lots of linux 9s. Which linux distribution did you install? Redhat, Slackware, SuSE etc....
I will guess Redhat.

Looks like something went wrong with the xserver. Enter your regular users name at the login prompt and press enter. Then type in the users password. The password is not echoed with **** which is why you assume that nothing is happening.

Once logged on type in startx and press the enter key. Post any errors.
