I want to s**t can kaboodle and am trying to go into the System Settings > Packages throiugh KDE. The window opens very briefly and then closes. Same thing happens to me when trying to use the hardware browser.
OK, if no one wants to get into the problem with the damn windows not staying open long enought for me to use them, maybe I can ask another question...
How can I get rid of kaboodle from a command line? I am almost positive that is causing problems with xmms and other stuff.
Cheers, mhearn.
I know it takes tiome and I am usually very patient. I guess it was just one of those days. Didn't mean it to sound as harsh as it did.
I am going to hol doff on the command line to remove kaboodle for now, but I know that kaboodle never seemed to do much for me on prior installation.
Regarding the redhat-config-packages command, I get the following:
# redhat-config-packages

yeah, it means there is a bug in redhat-config-packages. This tool in particular was rather buggy in the 8.0 release (as .0 releases often are). From now on until you upgrade I'd recommend simply using the command line, unfortunately the traceback doesn't tell me much other than "redhat screwed up". You could search bugzilla I guess.
OK, well maybe you can ehlp me with the ultimate goal here, which is that I cannot load a song into xmms. I spent the day yesterday looking for answers. I had no problems with this before I reinstalled RH8 with ALL packages. (Don't ask--I had my reasons ; )) The one thing I do know is that in a previous install of RH8 opening something with kaboodle would prompt me to submit a bug report so I killed it and used xmms instead. I can't help thinking that kaboodle is part of my problem with loading songs into xmms. Maybe that doesn't make any sense, but I'm getting a little desperate.
Good idea. Unfortunately, it didn't do anything in terminal. Do you think it makes any sense at all to uninstall kaboodle from command line or does that not make any sense with respect to xmms?
No, they are entirely separate, there should be no need to uninstall Kaboodle.
Check in the plugin prefs page that you have the MP3 plugin properly installed at set up. Then make sure the output is set right. Then try playing an ogg or something, then an mp3. Just work through the problem logically.
mhearn, if I do cat messages in /var/log after trying to access the Packages console from gui I get the following:
Feb 5 18:34:54 localhost userhelper: pam_timestamp: timestamp file `/var/run/sudo/Thomas/unknown:root' is too old, disallowing access to redhat-config-packages for UID 500
I have a feeling that I could correct this using Webmin if I poked around in the rules there, but I have not yet downloaded webmin and I would really prefer to not rely on it; I'd rather learn the command line way. Any suggestions based on the above log info?
