Input/output error mounting cdrom

I am having a problem viewing the contents of certain CDs in either of my drives.
If I try to use "ls" to view the contents I get the message "bash: cd: cdrom: Input/output error.
The CDs are full of jpg's. I got a one from a friend that was made on a XP machine, and figured that might be the problem. Then I made my own using CDRecord but got the same result.
On my CD I know the different directories and I can get a list of individual directories and their contents.

any ideas??

I'm using Mandrake 9.1, and having the same problem:

cd/mnt/cdrom-->
"bash: cd: cdrom: Input/output error"

Apparently I cannot mount non-data CDs... data CD's work just fine, it's only the music discs that trip it up.

Ahhhh.....

Now I understand...

You have to unmount the cdrom before you can play music.

I feel silly.
