improving the linux experiance

running ubuntu 8.04 dual boot with windows- need windows for avery label program , ibm via voice and access data base .chose 8.04 because of long term support. firefox is now unstable and does not do streaming video ' audio.[ustream in particular and others] usually i get the video but not the audio. sometimes the fox just closes and i can open it on the second try- sometimes not. skype does work. there may be a fix for the audio using libflash support program. where to get this& what to do with it is a problem. perhaps it would be prudent to upgrade to 10.04 but this seems to be a work in progress and might lead me into further problems. on the other hand i could work up to ubuntu 9.10 if it would be more likely to work better the get to 10.04 when it is further along. opinions and or suggestions would be welcome .i am pretty useless with the command line.on the whole ubuntu has worked well until this problem came up. thanks slow learner

1 - read the link in my sig
2 - come back and ask discrete questions, not 74230 things at once
3 - Try 10.04 as a live CD, without installing it. I'd wait til 10.04.1 then install it, because 10.04 is also LTS.

#1 how and or what am i looking for
#2 only really one question and that is-- easy way to get audio on ustream .tv
#3 10.04 live says jt needs plug ins to play streaming sites which do not seem to install& work .
thanks for the suggestions however. perhaps waiting for introduction of 10.04 is best for now. thanks. slow learner

Generally squeaking distros are less buggy the older they get until they are no longer supported when bugfixes stop being published. Following that line of reasoning 8.04 should be the least buggy but your experience shows it is still buggy in some areas that are important for you. There is some evidence that ubuntu assign more resources to new releases than old ones so it is possible that 8.04 defects are fixed in 9.10 or 10.04. But the same line of reasoning says that 10.04, being very new, is still relatively buggy. Think of it being like a Windows release before SP1.

If you really want these things to work, why stick with the ubuntus? There are other distros with different design and release approaches that mean they have less defects. The tradeoff is that they also tend to be not quite so up-to-date. Not for nothing is "leading edge" humorously called "bleeding edge".

started with mandriva a few years ago -moved to ubuntu and have had good satisfaction until this rather vexing problem-- reluctant to change distribution because with the dual boot there might be complications. think i sort of got to the problem but not the fix.-- when i tried ubuntu live it indicated that ustream needed adobie flash.going to --about mozilla in fox then to support then what help then to search audio -- indicates flash videos do not play correctly-- then it indicates problem fixed in flash 10 and it also require libflashsupport for heron -- checked adobe website &it will say i have 9.0.262.o installed and recommend 10.0.45.2. in addition i do not think i have the latest fox-- could check-- however if i go to add remove applications in ubuntu it indicates that adobie flash 10 plugin is installed. libflashsupport is not there in the applications but i think i downloaded it at some point.---to complete i checked fox version on the computer it is 3.0.19 and the latest is 3.6.3 tried to upgrade but obviously it did not take. have no idea as where to go from here. thanks for the further comments. slow learner

I'm not trying to be sarcastic but have you ever heard of paragraphs/capitalisation/the subject of a sentence?

Seriously, it's a pain to read your posts.

You'll get better responses if you stop using mental shortcuts in your writing and start applying standard language rules.

I did look back at your post to try to answer it, but I have no idea what you're on about.
Some other member suggested that you read a link in his/her signature. Have you done it?

You have an older version of Ubuntu and I would assume that the versions in your repos are no longer updated. You can either remove flash from your plugin directory and then grab the latest version direct from Adobe or upgrade your system to 10.04 - Hardy Heron will cease to be supported in April 2011, but I would guess that in the drive for it to use stable software, they are not updating any packages unless there are security or stability issues.
