i686, i586, i386
Hello!
What does it mean when a distro is I386, I586, I686? Does this refer to processor? If so then what would a P3 866 be? Do I have to use the coresponding IXXX or can I use a different one? What if I have 2 processors? Am I on the right track?? Thanks in advance! :newbie: |
You're safe with the i686 if you're on a PIII. If you want to support miltple CPUs out-of-the-box then you'll want a kernel that supports SMP (symmetric multi processing).
You can always install a plain-jane kernel and then build to suit your tastes (SMP, big RAM support, ad infinitum) |
Thanks a bunch!
