I want to know how to clean memory and cache.

Hello,

IŽll appreciate if you can help me with the following or derivate to the correct group.

I always clean memory and cache memory using the command "sync ; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches", but this command doesnŽt work in one of my Linux server, the "uname -a" command of this server is:

Linux Server 2.4.21-47.ELsmp #1 SMP Wed Jul 5 20:30:47 EDT 2006 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

Could you say me what is the correct way to clean memory and cache in this type or version of the RedHat Linux?

Thanks in advance.

According to man proc, drop_caches was introduced in 2.6.16. It's used to release currently unused memory from some file-system-related caches.
Unused cache memory is automatically released when needed. For the same result, you could run a program that allocates and touches a lot of memory.
