i have succeeded in creating a samba share for my DVD drive, but the problem is NO ONE CAN ACCESS THE FILES TO PLAY VIA THE LAN. reason is simple, the way linux does its security on a device is that only the user seassion (for lack of a better term) can gain anything more then 600 permissions on said device.
no matter how you creat it you can not share it out.
so i come begging and pleading with the linux gurus of this site to help me beat my system into submission. i want full rx permssions to my DVD player. i want at least 644 permissions 755 is not needed, but he if i can get there i can get to 644 so i can play DVDs via the LAN.
no converting it to an avi file is not an option. DVD::RIP is not working properlyl atm and is wanting to use more then 6G of space on the drive to make a simple 700M avi file.
this is the reason i want to share out the drive, since DVD::RIP is being such a pig (dont try to get me to use acid rip, not that it can not do the job, but it is not compatable with my system as my vs lf kde, debian, and mplayer refuse to play nice together. if i try to install mplayer ill have to completely rebuild my GUI and that is not acceptable (mplayer will remove roughly 100 packages that are required by KDE to run so that is a no no and will never happen again on my systems) i am just going to use good ol nero to get the avi file i want to put on my HD.
this is a media project that up until about 2 weeks ago ran perfectly. DVD::RIP was not being a pig, kaffeine was working and i had no issues, now all of the suddend with a distro upgrade all hell broke lose. i am trying to avoid removing the drive from the debian box and putting it in my windows box. my windows box is the file server (just due to having the sATA drives and over 300G of storage space vs older 5400rpm drives and only about 80G of space) and is my gaming box.
in a windows network this would be a matter of a few clicks and less then 2min worth of work. yes windows is inherantly less secure, but IMHO one major reason for having a LAN in the first place is to SHARE SYSTEM RESOURCES. this includes and is not limited to HARDWARE like dvd players, cdrw, tap back up devices, etc...
if the only person who can gain access to the full rwx or at least rx permissions on hardware is the person phsyically connected to the system, then that is a major downfall to the linux networking ability, and i will be forced to admit that windows can do something WAY better then linux in a LAN/networking enviroment. that is to share resources, and after all isnt that what a LAN is for?
i run debian sarge distro on the system in question so the console.perms file does not exsist, and the /etc/login.defs i have tried setting the ttyperm to 622, even tried 644 and 755 with no luck...
Code:
#
# Terminal permissions
#
# TTYGROUP Login tty will be assigned this group ownership.
# TTYPERM Login tty will be set to this permission.
#
# If you have a "write" program which is "setgid" to a special group
# which owns the terminals, define TTYGROUP to the group number and
# TTYPERM to 0620. Otherwise leave TTYGROUP commented out and assign
# TTYPERM to either 622 or 600.
#
TTYGROUP tty
TTYPERM 0644
so i have tried setting the permissions to change the default from 600 to higher less secure settings with no luck. all i want is the freedom to do as i please with my hardware via my LAN, is this not possible in linux?
