I need Xfce Education (Solved)
 

Hello Linux folks.

I am looking for some help with Xfce if anyone has the interest or opportunity.

I have 3 tasks I need to learn to do with Xfce customizing. I have seen them done, I just need to figure out how to do them.

1) modify a custom right click menu in Xfce. meaning, I would like to have the "regular" menu on the panel, but a custom menu on the right click on the desktop ( if you have seen Mint Xfce, you will know what I refer to.)

2) modify the exit bar to include other options ( such as user switching, etc )

3) how to use /skel in Xfce to make universal changes in defaults for all ne w created users.

If anyone might be able to help me with one or more of these topics, I would be so very appreciative.

I have not used this...

In my quick Google, right next to this was something from 4.0 saying the only way to edit menus was manually. This must be a new tool

I used "xfce menu edit" in Google

of course google. gee, I never thought of that.

sorry if that sounds sarcastic but google is your friend only if it has the appropriate info to pull up. there in no really specific info on this subject so far as my google and other numerous searches have found.


So far, I suspect the menu issue is going to be solved in a config file by changing the name of the menu the right click calls. but, what config file and where is it? that is one thing I am trying to find.

the same essentially goes for the exit bar.

the /skel issue I have tried a number of tactics that have worked when using KDE, but do not seem to work for Xfce.

OK. I was looking at it "backwards" so to speak.

If I "save as" my default menu when I first open the menu editor, to (example) "mymenu", I can modify the menu in the panel to get a "custom" menu, specifying "mymenu".

then, I can go back to the default menu and modify any way I like and then the panel menu looks the "standard" way and my right click menu is my modified "default".

I was looking at it as the panel menu would be the one to be the default and the right click would be the one to change.

the panel menu is the "custom" menu.

now that's solved.

From all I have read at the Xfce forums, the "desktop right click" we see on xubuntu and Mint xfce, is a specifically customized xfce done by ubuntu.

so, outside of compiling and modifying yourself, it's a ubuntu specific thing.

now, on to the exit bar, which I am seeing is about the same thing, an ubuntu custom recompile of the default xfce.

( these are guesses based on searches of the xfce forums. searches are only as good as the very specific terms you enter to search for)

I fixed my last issue.

/skel DOES indeed work correctly. one must use a "regular" customized user acct. Cannot use the root acct.

I wasn't able to make an exit bar, what I was looking at was a recompiled version made by ubuntu, but I was able to add a custom "Quit" menu that offers all the options, so all's well.

and of course, I was able to create a customize panel menu and right click menu using the menu editor. Made a new panel menu by opening the default, then "save as" panelmenu" then customze to add my "quit" sub menu.

After that, I modify the default or "root" menu to show only the options I want for right click function on desktop.

most of the "main" Xfce apps for tasks and functions, commands can be found in /usr/share/applications.

all in all. I learned a lot and hopefully, this can help others by having it all in one place. If nothing else a starting point in making Xfce truly your own.
