I need suggestion about some project

Hi all
I am an engineering student and my field of interests are Data Structures and Operating System..
I want to do some project in linux... I have been using linux since last two years..The project which i thought is to develop a small linux or unix like kernel, but I really dont know where to start from.. Somebody please suggest me something regarding my thought project or suggest some other operating system related project..

This website has a book (in .pdf form) which tells you how to build an entire linux distribution from scratch. Although it sounds fairly large (over 100 MB), it can be reduced in size. I know this because of a distribution of linux called TS-Linux, designed for embedded x86 systems (website here ). This distribution was made with the Linux from scratch book.
