Here's my guess... Because it's a live CD the kernel is fixed and has everything and its dog included so it's trying to access a lot of hardware you don't have (like the modem), it'll eventually time out with the error you see.

If you actually install the distro, after scanning your hardware, it'll only install the bits relating to your actual hardware, so no errors on booting after install.
