I messed up my / permissions

I know, I know...i shouldn't do anything as root. Anyway, I thought I was in a different directory and i typed in chmod 775 * while in the / directory.

Now when I try to boot up my system it flashes between the gui logon screen (which never actually displays) and the command line login. My quick typing skills got me able to boot into the system in command line mode. The screen continued flickering, so I typed in "startx" for the hell of it, and that got the screen to stop flickering and throw and error and stay in command line mode.

Now, if someone could be so kind as to post the default permissions for the directories in /, I would greatly appreciate it.

And if you think my problem is caused by something other than, or in association with this, please let me know.

I'm running fedora core 2, but I don't think that matters.

Thanks,
NP C

Ok, well I booted up my laptop using a Knoppix cd and everything appeared to be 755.

I made all the changes and tried startx again. No dice.

The error it gives is this:
"Could not init font path element unix/:7100, removing from list

Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

Any ideas?

thanks

I fixed it by adding the following lines to my xorg.conf file under the 'files' section:

FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/"

You probably need to fix up the permissions on /root, /tmp and /proc.

Good thing you didn't execute 'chmod -R 775 * !!
Then you would really be toast.

hahaha yeah. That's kinda funny because I meant to put the -R switch in there!!

I appreciate the permissions listing you left.
