I could use the user account I created in FC 5, but after upgrading to FC 6 I cannot

This is my first posting at linuxquestions.org . I am a very big fan of Linux, Java, postgreSQL and open-source in general.
Recently I got the luck of installing Fedora Core 5 on my PC
(Intel Pentium 4 3.06 GHz, 256 MB RAM). I upgraded it to FC 6.
The user that I had created on FC 5 could work properly. But now it cannot work. It gives error indicating that the password is wrong. Also now I have upgraded my PC to 1 GB of RAM.
Since the 'old' user couldn't work so I created a new user. But even this is not working.
Thanks in advance to one and all for whatever help I get from them.

Wow! that's tough,

Are you saying you cannot log in with the new user you created from root account?
That is to say, you can log in as root right?
Are you using upper & lower case digits in your password?
Because this is the only thing I can think of that would give you a password error, mixing up the upper lower case thing.
(It happened to me)

For the old users, assuming you didn't reformat the /home partition of course, you can use the "passwd" command to make a new password for the user. Also double check if that user has an entry in /etc/passwd.

When I type in wrong password, I get the appropriate message. But when give the CORRECT password, I get the message Authentication failed !
