This is not wierd at all, it is the way things work. Not all programs when they install create icons for you to click on, or update the menus. In some cases you have to do it manually after the package is installed.
Open Office writer will open from a bash command prompt is you enter 'oowriter' ( wihtour the quotes ). Try that, if it launches, then the package is O.K. You will need to edit the menu, and add entries for each component you installed. Calc, Data Base Draw, etc.
Same thing for rdesktop.
To know why the icons did not get put into the menu, you would have to ask the packagers for Fedora. I run Mandriva, they get created for it.
Other things to know....
How to find a file... from a bash command prompt, as root run the command 'updatedb'. The first time you run it, it will take some time. The system will build a data base of files on your entire system. To fine a file after the database is built, at the command line enter 'locate nameoffiletobefound' You can use a partial string, you won't always know the full name of the file. It is fast, it will list the path to all matches.
Try it with oowriter, see what you find. Here is what it looks like on my system...
Quote:
locate oowriter
/etc/alternatives/oowriter
/opt/kde3/share/mimelnk/application/x-oowriter.desktop
/usr/bin/oowriter
/usr/bin/oowriter3.0.1
/usr/share/man/man1/oowriter3.0.1.1.lzma
|
The binary that starts up is in /usr/bin on my system.
Hope this helps...
