Question I can't view a new CD without restarting computer

This is a very odd problem. I have many many cds and some DVDs full of digital photos. I was building a spreadsheet listing the CDs and DVDS by title, the names of the folders on those CDs and DVDs and the year the pictures were taken so that at last I might defeat the never ending problem of where is the picture I took____? I had done a few disks full of pictures when suddenly my computer (Linux running Mandriva 2009 and KDE 4.1.1) stopped seeing the new CD or DVD when I put it in the drive. We tried changing the fstab, checking mounts, checking disks(all were good on another computer) and searching the net for helps. No one seems to have this problem(or they aren't talking about it)but me. We even reinstalled Mandriva 2009 today a to no avail. The Disks were coming up in Dolphin and we noticed that after we had ejected the first CD that CD remained as the identified CD in Dolphin. We then tried opening the cd with Konqueror and this worked for one change before it held onto the identity of the first CD and would not recognize the change. I have been using Mandriva for sometime and have never had so much trouble with anything while using it. If anyone out there knows what is going on please clue me in before I toss the computer out the door and thousands of digital family pictures right along with it. Just kidding about tossing it but I am big time frustrated.

Most likely a hardware problem rather than a linux problem, methinks. Check the connections at the back of your CD / DVD drive.

Make sure that the KDED Media Manager is running and also the Media Notifier Daemon. In KDE3 you'll find these in the KDE Control Center under Service Manager. I don't know where they'd be in KDE4.

Even if you have some problem with these, you should be able to change CDs by unmounting the CD you are removing (do this before removing it) and then mounting the new CD when you put it in the drive.
