Maybe that's the problem

Generally it is not necessary and also dangerous to login to the graphical system as root. Some distributions do not even permit this. I know, this does not help you with your current problem, but may prevent some problems in the future. With root permissions you can mess up your system very easily. Try to become root temporary with commands like su, sudo or kdesu (if working in KDE).

To your problem: did you have a look in the suggested error file? What does it say?

From what I can tell, you're trying to start a window manager that doesn't exist or that isn't working. Try selecting a different on, e.g., Gnome, KDE, etc., if that's possible with Red Hat. Otherwise, start repairing your system!

switchdesk kde (or gnome) to change sesion types.

Look in /etc/securetty root can only log in terminals that are listed in there. Make sure there are vt1 vt2 etc entries
