but in the meantime, i'll get both my xp boxes running because i need to actually do some work with computers - burn 40 cd's in 5 hours - ain't gonna happen with my linux box

It appears that I did hose it. When I tried to run it again, it required my root password, and though I had CD1 inserted, I just couldn't find out how to go on.

So, since this was a new hdd, and only had Linux on it, and always will, I decided to give it a low level format with Maxtor's hdd utility. I want NOTHING left on it.

Thanks for the links. I am in China, and downloaded the 3 .iso's and all 6 manuals from RedHat ftp (only ones local are in Chinese). I'm reading from your suggestions while it does the format. 60GB drive will take a few hours.

From my first install, I chose Server and all the packages, but I guess they were running and not just installed. Maybe this time when I install my *shiny Linux box* I will know better what services to leave off. It appears better to start and add, than load up and shut them down.
