Huge kernel problems

I've googled for days looking for some sort of list over the options I NEED to get a functioning kernel, but I can't seem to find one. You see, I've tried five times now, compiling a kernel from source, following guides to the letter, but my computer won't run on them. The options might not be the problem though. One of my kernels did run, but it was painfully slow, so I discarded it. Is 1790k big for a normal kernel? I have no idea why the kernels won't run or why they are slow, but it's quite irritating having to boot from a diskette all the time. Might it have to do with that by the way, starting the computer from a boot diskette and doing the kernel installation not having booted from the mbr?

----------

I'm trying to update from kernel 2.4.2.2 to kernel 2.6.6 and just read that the module-init-tools needed to be updated when transitionin between 2.4.x to 2.6.x, so I'll try that, but isn't swaret supposed to update such stuff?
