Howto reduce CPU count

I have a virtual machine that was installed with Redhat. At the time of the install, the VM guest (rhel) was assigned 2 CPUs. Since the installation of RHEL 4, we have decided to reduce the CPUs from 2 to 1. This was done on the VMware side. The virtual guest (RHEL) now runs dog slow. We have been told by VMware that the OS needs to be configured for 1 CPU instead of 2. Does anyone know how to do this. VMware said it was done within GRUB, but not sure where.

maxcpus=1

From what I found using Google, the above argument added to the kernel boot line in the grub.conf file will set the max # of CPUs to 1. Then reboot.

Did it work?
