Howcome everything is echoed outside of X?

Hi. I like using the plain old text Linux without X for programming in vim. Just wondering why when I type something .... like say to launch a program I wrote, the command is echoed on the screen before the program runs?

like if I type>

$ programname .... its echoed like this on the next line
programname
Please enter your first name

If I am back in X at xterm I would type>

programname .... and it would just launch program like this
Please enter your first name

without echoing the command I just typed to standard out first.

Just wondering why this happens

thanks

you might have "set -x" somewhere in your ~/.bashrc ~/.bash_profile or /etc/profile. If so, comment it out (or delete it ;-)
