how to ... X setup Graphical Display for IRAF?

Hey!
My problem is running IRAF in Display mode! I would like to use STSDAS to make Surface Brightness profile... I have a problem running X server & i cannot (or mybe don not know how to properly start up) run XGterm (or XImtool) for IRAF to start in graphical display (window) mode! Could sb. please tell me how & what comands do i have to use to run IRAF in graphical mode (not in cshell terminal)!?! Ok, to describe the situation a little more:

I have installed IRAF v.2.12.2 on RedHat 9 (2.40.2-6), i also installed X11IRAF v1.3.1 (Xgterm,Ximtool... stuff) (`ve just runned the ./install script (with s.u. account) on bin. files like it says in the readme...) ...then i have installed TABLES & STSDAS v.3.3. external packages! (all installations were done by the instructions in manuals:PC-IRAFv2.12.2 istallation guide and STSDAs instalation guide-[only, the X11IRAFv1.3.1.bin.redhat.tar.gz was run by reading README file: 1.unziping tar archive and then with s.u. permission ./install following the scripts –thats all-it seems little?])
...it all works when i run cl in terminal & when i run xgterm in terminal it works! The problem occures when i have to display image...like:

cl> tv.display
image to be displayed: (exp. ...)
# then it prompts
ERROR: canot open device (mode! Imtool ,, 512,512)

# i found out that the problem should be
1. imtool window isnt running or
2. somting wasnt right wit the installation – lets say that inst. was ok and try running...

# so when i try to run :

$ ximtool # i get:
Incorrectly built binary which accesses errno, h_errno or _res directly. Needs to be fixed

# (here i have no clue what is this about or how should be fixed...? ...mybe it is the #consequence of the following ERROR and will work when this is corrected?)

ERROR: Detected incorrect X visual: depth=24 class=TrueColor

# so i try to change the depth to 8, which should be set...and in between i had to remove file /tmp/X0-lock ...:

$ startx -- -depth 8 # (i think this command works with Redhat 9 as well as 7) ...and get:
- XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener: ...SocketCreatListener 0 failed
- XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener: server already running

Fatal server error:
Cannot establish any listening sockets – Make sure an X server isnt already running!

# now im lost here... how the f... can i set up Xserver so Ximtool and Xgterm would be funconal in the way IRAF could be launched in Graphical mode and used...?? (btw., i work in KDE or GNOME desktop on RedHat 9 (2.40.2-6)) ....am i missing something?
Thnx! PS: u can also respond to: pakojaja@email.si
