How to use Orico USB external HDD on Linux

Can anyone tell me how it's done? Orico model is 3588US3. Hard drive is inserted, formatted ext4. It causes lsusb output to change, but with a blank (no mfr name, no device description).

What says "dmesg" just after you plug in the USB HDD?

In addition, I have to ask the obvious questions...

Is the enclosure powered on and the LED illuminated? Can you tell if the drive has power i.e spinning if a mechanical device?

Although installing the drive seems foolproof can you verify the connectors are actually fully inserted?

Are you plugging the enclosure into a USB 3 or USB 2 port? If USB 3 then try a USB 2 port if possible.

Also take a look at lsblk and/or fdisk. I often use external drives in docking stations and usually verify the drive was recognized with lsblk

What distro/version and what desktop environment are you using?

I've used external USB drives for years and not had any issues with them. These days, they usually just appear in /run/media/[username] and, depending on the desktop environment/window manager, may or may not display a notification.

Didier Spaier's advice is excellent. Once you find out how the device appears in dmesg, post the relevant output here, being sure to surround it with code tags, which become available when you click the "Go Advanced" button beneath the "Compose Post" windows, and we can move on to the next step.

Hi,
I had a similar problem with an Orico 7688U3, when using an ext4 formatted 3TB HDD with GPT partitioning. It wouldn't show up and mount automatically in the file manager, but showed up in gnome's 'disks' application as "unallocated".

The same enclosure then worked automatically with a 640 GB ext4 HDD, with no problems.

I saw on the Orico site a Hard Drive Enclosure Firmware Update: "This update is mainly used to solve the use of greater than 2TB capacity (with data ) of the hard disk can not be properly identified, shown as GPT protected partition or need to re-initialize the hard disk. Models:3139U3, 6139U3, 7688U3, MD35U3"

I realise this isn't your model, but wonder if it is a similar problem.

I haven't tried to update the enclosure firmware as I have no idea of how to do this.
