you "install" linux from a boot disk or cd, it should install some boot manager lilo/grub for you to boot up into windows or linux.

loadlin is used if you cannot put linux in your boot manager or you don't want a boot manager, and you always boot up into windows.
and you want to use loadlin to boot up into linux after you had booted up in windows.

Do you have a CD on the portable?

I'm writing this to you from my portable with linux/windows dual boot, I installed it via CD, I made the spare space in my windows disk to a spare partition using the "fips" program.
