How to update the Kernel?

Hi all,

I am newbie of update the Linux Kernel, I am using Red Hat 7.2 in my company, now, I go to redhat.com and see the update have released the newest kernel.

I want to download the i586.rpm kernel to install

Do I just need like install or update other rpm package that enter

#rpm -ivh 2.4.18-27.i586.rpm

Then ok?

My HDD partition is a bit special, here are my partition

hda1 /boot (RedHat) Primary Partition
hda2 (Winodws 2000 Server) Primary Partition
hda3 (Windows 2000 Pro) Primary Partion
hda4 Extended Partition

hda5 / (Red Hat) Logical Partition
hda6 swap (Red Hat) Logical
hda7 1GB FAT32
hda8 5 GB NTFS
hda9 3 GB FAT32

The lilo loader I am not install in the MBR, I install in the first boot sector, do I need some special setting if after update the new kernel in the LILO which not install in the MBR?

Re: How to update the Kernel?

##rpm -ivh 2.4.18-27.i586.rpm

I think that thats the only way you could install the rpm, unless is a "src" rpm... I'm not sure, so if i'm wrong correct me.

THis part I can't understand what you are trying to say, but I know that if you update your kernel you will have to update your lilo config.. For more detail about updating your kernel read this how-to right here

http://linux-newbie.sunsite.dk/lnag_kernel_upgrade.html

I hope this will help you.. Good luck.
