How to turn off beep in vitual console


I have no X installed and boot into runlevel 3.

I want to turn off the beep that is sounded when I use the Tab key for command completion etc..It is driving me nuts!

Please help.

you should be able to run "set bell-style none" in your .bashrc to turn it off.

alternatively just unplug the speaker!

Thanks.
Tried your suggestion, but it is still happening.

Our machines are locked and its a huge thing to get the powers that be to open them. If that is the only solution I will have to do it.. *sigh*

That comment about cats is so cool.

Under X window
xset b off
This will mute apps using the standard XBeep function.

In a console, try to edit your /etc/inputrc file, there should be a line like this (put it to none):
set bell-style none
