/etc/sysconfig/desktop file should contain the line for starting gdm
DESKTOP=GNOME
If u want to use GDM..

Also check if the dropdown menu has an entry for GNOME

Put "exec gnome-session" in your ~/.xinitrc [ie. /root/.xinitrc or /home/jaakop/.xinitrc].

If you dont have .xinitrc file at the above specified locations, create one. This way you get to tty first and then you can do startx and choose Gnome or KDE.
