How to set up port listening for Synchronet BBS?

I've built and installed Synchronet BBS 3.15a (SBBS) on a Slackware 12.2 system. It runs normally as near as I can tell, but I need to set it up to listen on a TCP port for its telnet server; otherwise I can't connect to it either remotely or locally.

The closest things I could find browsing commands were iptables, which I understand is for opening ports in the firewall, and portmap, which unfortunately seems to be almost the right thing but isn't. SBBS's *nix documentation doesn't cover any of the specifics beyond installing and configuring the software itself.

I can try my hand at figuring out iptables later once I decide to go live with my BBS, but I have no idea where to start on the port listening.

From common sense, your BBS software itself would start up a daemon or something daemon-like, to listen for connections, otherwise it's not much point, is it? Maybe you can Google around for info on how to do this.....?

Thanks but all daemonizing SBBS does is tuck it away in the background. I wouldn't mind googling if I had some idea what I was looking for.

Is it a matter of creating an iptables rule that points to SBBS or is there another service or config file used to steer TCP port 23 traffic to SBBS?

Tuck WHAT away in the background? The daemon? Well that's exactly what you need. Maybe your solution is to stop the telnetd that comes WITH Linux (it's a part of xinetd AFAIK), and let your BBS software start up, whereupon it'll answer port 23....? (Of course your firewall must allow this to happen - but I have no knowledge of configuring iptables).

Thanks for your replies. I've managed to get it working. Turns out it was a matter of creating a separate user/group for SBBS to run under.
