How to set up dns server?

Hi to all
Can anybody help meto set up a dns server?

eSelix 12-14-2010 04:47 AM

Of course, we are here to help. You must say which distribution you are using, which server do you want (if not already choosed, I recommend "dnsmasq" for small home network). After reading manual you should known everything what is needed. In the short: create entries in /etc/hosts and /etc/ethers (if you also want DHCP) and configure server to run as daemon on boot.

This is a big question - what you are asking us to do is to write a manual (actually, several manuals). If I had time to do that...well, actually, there is a chance that someone will come along who has the time to spend thousands of hours on your question, but, if I were you, I wouldn't be holding my breath.

if you want more direct help, I would suggest the following
  • please define what you want the DNS server to do for you; if you don't understand how various this question might be, please have a look at the 'BIND recipes' book, which has code fragments to deal with hundreds and hundreds of different use cases
  • understand networking; the first part of the book 'DNS and Bind' is good for this, but many other books exist. Alternatives are the linuxhomenetworking site (not just the DNS page), or yolinux.
  • dnsmasq, as suggested by eSelix is a great little program; probably unsuitable if you are doing this in order to learn enough about DNS to sell your skills in this area to a Fortune 500, but great for home users
  • please ask direct, detailed, questions...'tell me all about DNS' would be a very difficult question to answer, simply because it needs such a lot of answering, and covers so many aspects, where 'how can I set up a simple caching DNS server, for a simple SOHO network, using a DSL network interface and a wired connection to my five Linux workstations' is orders of magnitude simpler to answer, just because it eliminates so much that you would have to write to answer the first question adequately

Or just let me know from where to start?

eSelix 12-22-2010 04:39 AM

Please, refine your question: what exactly do you want to do, how large is your network, where you want to install your DNS server (on router or on PC, on which distribution)? As I said before, you can start from installing "dnsmasq" It is very simple.

don't suggest anything, untill you know what he/she really need/want.
suggesting things wildly will only confuse the questioner more.
Thus for now, dnsmasq is not an option (yet), untill further information is gathered/provided.
