How to retrieve email from cron scripts ?

I have a cron entry that executes a script which creates a tar backup of my data. Nothing fancy here. It executes as expected but my problem is finding the cron email messages. In my script I have MAILTO=$USER
When looking in my Linux partition I found my email in /var/spool/mail in a text file named the same as my logon name. Looking in that txt file I can see my execution cron data with the email from/to/subject headings and 'cron' in the subject detail.
All emails are in this one file. Looks like it appends them as they are generated. I am new to cron and not sure if this is what it should do. If anyone can enlighten me on this and describe how I can configure evolution to retrieve this email or do I have to use fetchmail in which case how do I specify the fetchmail.config. I am running Fedora Core 1.

Thanks
Wallace

"I am new to cron and not sure if this is what it should do."

Everything seems to be working correctly.

"how I can configure evolution to retrieve this email or do I have to use fetchmail in which case how do I specify the fetchmail.config. I am running Fedora Core 1."

I recommend that you use the tail command. See:
man tail
