how to reset system default for my session

OK so I updated my kernel and now my login system default is x-windows (i think). I have tried everything to get gnome to start up. I can open gnome programs and have gone to the control center to set gnome as my system default, however it tells me the change will not take place until I shut down x-windows. When I do exit out of x-windows and log back in it just goes back to the x-windows. I am using fedora core 3. kernel 2.6.9.1.681_fc3. SO please help because I really do not want to reinstall fedora, and I have been working on this for 2 days. I also updated 2 pam files when I did the kernel update, but I reset those to the old ones and it does not do anything. ALso I restarted using the old kernel, samething it just logs me into x-windows.

You need to totally restart X, the easiest way is to do a ctrl-alt-backspace to restart it..

I don't know FUDoras inner workings too well but
I'm fairly certain that the default-session and the
kernel-upgrade are non-related. ... Maybe you
should have a look at your ~/.xsession or ~/.xinitrc
files ...

Cheers,
Tink

OK first based on the assumption that I find .xsession and .xinitrc what should be in them, what should they look like? ALso I looked at the script for Xclient and it said at the bottom basically if all else fails then start x with a xterm and a clock and that is precisely what starts up everytime.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, and the help

It turns out that some how my Gnome-session got deleted so I reinstalled it and what do you you know gnome starts right up.
Very strange

Oh one more thing, for all of those people who get really frustrated, like me, The nice thing was that I was able to get my system up and running again just like new, without reinstalling my OS(I had the cd in the drive just waiting to do a system reinstall). All of my information was still there waiting for me, and I learned a ton about my system. So just stick withit if you have a problem.
