How To Read Internet Bandwidth From LInux

Hello everyone:

I am using Mandrake 10.1 and I use its Control Center to monitor the bandwidth of some phone calls when I use different codecs. The Control Center reads the "sending speed rate" and "receiving speed rate" in kbs. My question is, Are these rates meant to be the bandwidth?
The reason I am asking is that these rates doesn't reflect the expected codec bandwidth. For instance a call using ulaw codec should consume 80 kbs whereas linux sending and receiving rate readings is 9.3.

Thanks in advance

see if it's using KB instead of Kb...

download rates are usually measured in kilobytes (KB) while bandwidth is usually measured in kilobits (Kb)...

8Kb = 1KB

9.3 * 8 = 74.4

i'm not sure if this is what's happening to you, but it might be...

this might be the usual confusion about the internet bandwidth.

If its Kbps (small b) its kilo bits per second
If its KBps (caps B) its kilo bytes per second

I know the difference between kbs and KBS. Mandrake control center says kbs. My question still is whether the sending and receiving speed rate is meant bandwidth.

download/upload rates show the speed of a particular download/upload... so if you have a download rate of 8KB/s then you can conclude that the download is using 64Kb/s of bandwidth...

Don't know if this helps, but I am using KDE. I installed KNetStats to monitor traffic. It has many features.

Here's an article about it:

Here's the sourceforge project:

I am sorry if i am not making myself clear. I am not asking about the difference between speed rate and bandwidth rate. I am trying to get another opinion about what Gnome is telling me. My interpretation of the the kbs reading in Mandrake Control Center is speed rate ( data speed rate) and not Bandwidth (the rate of Data moved). Am i right or wrong

It is kind of yes or no answer.

all i can say is that i would assume your tool is reporting bytes and not bits - regardless of wether a "B" or a "b" is being used...
