How to play DVD's?

I use mandrake 9.2 and i would like some (big!) help to play dvd's. I know about legal restrictions etc but i only wanna play my own dvd's that i buy.

I can play region free dvd's but not region x (like region 2 )

What do i have 2 download 2 c movies (somefiles i think like libcss and stuff)?

Can someone tell me the exact files to install ??

What you want is a package called Mplayer. You can download the rpm for Mandrake here.

I also recommend checking out the Mplayer Website

Mplayer, with the codec pack install (which I hope comes with RPM) can play almost anything video or audio wise.

Make sure you start another session as root to install the tar or rpm. Mplayer will not install correctly otherwise, even as SU.

Why would that be? I installed it on my machine using sudo and it works just fine. Not with an RPM mind you, I installed from source, but still.

Well. you could get a TV card working on Linux and then just get a $30 DVD player. :-) Of course, if you just like a challenge....

I did this on a windows side too, a nice DVD software package cost more than a cheap DVD player. Of course, this assumes you have a TV card or graphics card with TV ability (that actually works with Linux) installed or available (which I did).

One, It's part of the instructions. Two, much to my discredit, I did not follow them, and sure enough, mplayer wouldn't work! Woops. This is for SuSE, maybe other Distros are different.

Ya, must be a suse specific thing, and quite frankly, it doesn't make any sense. There shouldn't be a damn bit of difference between using su to be root and logging in as root to begin with on a system that is set up well.
