How to migrate a host (redhat) from calriion storage to Symmetrix

Hi

We have one production application server (Redhat AS3 ). This server is using Clariion storage . We want to migragte this SAN storage from Clariion to Symmetrix.

We know that EMC has introduced 'San Copy' for this type of migration but our company at this moment will not buy the 'SAN copy' tool of EMC.

Can anybody help me out giving some idea , that how we will migrate this host with minimum downtime...

Thanks in advance

It seems if you can't do SAN Copy you only have a couple of options:
1) Backup the Clariion filesystems to tape then unmount and disconnect the Clariion storage. Connect and mount the Symmetrix storage using same filesystem names. Then restore the tapes.

2) Go ahead and mount the new filesystems from Symmetrix using alternate names (e.g. if old filesystem is /oracle make the Symmetrix filesystem /new/oracle.) Then do a cp -Pr from /oracle to /new/oracle. Once you've done that umount /oracle and /new/oracle then remount the device that was /new/oracle as /oracle.

Obviously you'd want to shutdown all apps/databases before doing either option.

San Copy actually has some major limitations on the number of simultaneous copies (LUNs as I recall) can be done so depending on how much storage you have it might not have helped you. We were migrating a CX700 to a new CX700 and found out we couldn't use San Copy for the number of LUNs we had. Luckily most of that was on HP-UX using Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) so we were able to migrate using VxVM without any down time for most of it. We did use San Copy for migrating around 300 GB on Fibre Drives.

FYI: Symmetrix lets you create BCVs but tools are not the San Copy and are more robust and mature than San Copy for Clariion.
