How to make test of the lirc if working if not reboot x3 times for trial then shutdow

Hello,

My driver for lirc is not stable. Sometimes it is loaded at boot and sometimes wont work (driver / hardware that can be better).
How to make test of the lirc if working if not reboot x3 times for trial then shutdown if no success?

Just an idea.
Bash and /etc/rc2.d script can do the job (debian)
