How to gracefully start and stop VNC?

I've just recently learned that there is a VNC server for Linux... so please be patient with me!

I have installed vnc server on a couple of servers and have modified the xstartup file so that GDM runs for the user. All is well and good, except the user wants to be able to connect to the server without first logging in and running the vncserver command (details...details!) How is this done and is it secure?

Also, I would like the display manager to quietly retire once you hit the logoff icon. Currently, the session ends, but the server doesn't die, so must be killed manually (another annoyance for my user.)

Last but not least... how secure are the VNC transactions? Is tunneling through ssh a nightmare to setup?

in FC I know that you can run
chkconfig vncserver on
And vncserver will start automatically ...

vnc is not really that secure at all. if you are using it over the internet it is a good idea to run it through ssh. on your intranet, it should be fine to run vnc as it long as your network is secure. if i understood everything correctly, you are trying to kill the other kill a server you run

vncserver -kill :displaynumber

you would have to run that to stop get it to startup with the machine you use...

chkconfig --level 2345 vncserver on

you should only use vnc over the intranet unsecure...unless you are doing meaningless tasks...if anything involves passwords, root, su...anything you do not want readily know...tunnel it through ssh!
