How to find the version of a driver

In this case CX18 (for a tuner card with a conexant chip). I am trying to find out if I have the older buggier version of this driver in the kernel I got in my latest update in which case going through the hassle of configuring mysql and MythTV would just be an exercise in futility.

Is there a way to get the version info, like uname -r cx18 or something?

This particular card (HVR-1600)has not been supported in linux, just recently we have drivers included in newer kernel but it seems the latest kernel is using the older first release of drivers. I did find the text file on my main machine where "whatever" command would pull the string for the version number and it is 1.0.0. Best chance of success will be with the 1.0.4 so I will try adding them to the new PCLOS2009 install I put on the media PC last night.

It is an awful job to get this card going in linux, plenty of threads around about it I had a go on it last year with the beta drivers in debian sid. Got a stream at one point, just one channel on mplayer then lost it all trying to set up mythtv. I didn't want to spend the hours necessary if it was just the first driver.

Still wish I could find out what the command for a version of driver is. There must be a command for them to put it in a file formatted that way like a string for something to read it, no?
