how to create a .bin file in linux

dear all,

I want to create a .bin (binary) file to extract my files and folders, & also execute a script in one folder.

I could have done it with tar but it cant execute a script after extraction.

Help me to solve this problem.

Thanks & Regards,
Sharad.

This does not make sense...

A .bin file is normally a binary executable file. Are you saying that you want to have a program that will extract files and folders?? Extract from what?

Please explain more about what you are trying to accomplish.

You might want to try unzipsfx BUT, and I quote the manpage:

"...another compile-time option adds a simple ‘‘run command after extraction’’ feature. This feature is currently incompatible with the ‘‘extract to different directory’’ feature and remains disabled by default."

pixellany, I think he means to create a file just like the nvidia installer, it is a tarball and an executable at the same time. They often use names like "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8776-pkg1.run", but I might have seen a .bin with another program (don't recall exactly). I'm not sure how this is done though.

An easy way to do that is to use the makeself tool.
Create a directory called mydirectory
Code:
makeself mydirectory myfile.bin "Extracting my bin file" 'command to run after extraction of the bin file'
