How to avoid symlinking libraries?

I wanted to compile an upgrade to openh323 and ran into trouble. It complained about not finding libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3. I searched for the file and found it on my disc under /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/2.95.3/. I tried to adjust my LD_LIBRARY_PATH (thats what it's for, isn't it?) but it didn't help. Finally I symlinked the files needed to /usr/lib/ and now it compiles! But there must be another way to do this, I don't wan't sporadic symlinks all over my disc when I run into this kind of problem.

Anyone wanna help me?

/Alexander

Try running "ldconfig -v -p | grep -q -e "libstdc++"; echo Have_lib_in_path=$?"
If it returns 1 then read "man 8 ldconfig" and update the cache.

Hmm, editing /etc/ld.so.conf??

I finally edited /etc/ld.so.conf to include the directory containing the libraries. Is this ok to do?

That's why this file exists! It's absolutely OK.

You may need to run "ldconfig" (as root) after editing the file.
