How to auto check RAID array and send results?

Running RH9 for print and file sharing.

No display, keyboard, mouse directly connected. Doing admin using VNC server in RH9 and VNC viewer in WinXP Home.

I have a RAID1 array that all connected WinXP machines access.

What I ultimately want to do is have a filesystem check run on the RAID1 array automatically and send the results to an e-mail address.

From what I have been reading, it should be unmounted to do this, so does that completely exclude what I want to do? If not, how do I go about it? I'm a real Linux newbie, so be specific (and kind!)

Also, if there is a failure in the RAID that the system detects, can that be sent out via an e-mail? (And what happens if there is a failure? I'm hesitant to unplug a drive just to find out!)

Thanks,
Frank
