How to authenticate SAMBA against /etc/shadow or passwd ??

Hi,

I ran this question by the newsgroups, but i couldn't get any accurate answer.

I have a large Linux user database. I want to give users the option to logon from windows boxes, using the same unix username and password. Meaning, i want to use SAMBA as a PDC

What would be the best way ? - basically, i want to avoid using smbpasswd at all.

Thanks,
Amos Freund

I think there is a section in the samba HOWTO that talks about this. As I recall it was still in a beta test phase. If not there, I know I saw it in one of the samba books at a local book store. It seemed like it wasn't quite reliable enough to implement for my taste, but they may have made some progress since then.

Sorry I can't be any more help than that.

well, i *think* it's validated against passwd if you don't use encryption, and just send it in plain text... that's not likely to be a solution tho...

Is there a PAM module which can do that ? like pam_smb but other way around......
