how to add text to eps file?

Hi,

I have an eps file which I need to add some text to. I cannot regenerate the file so I have to edit the eps file. How can this be done? On another thread people said to use gimp or xfig but gimp gives me:

[]$ gimp test.eps
GNU Ghostscript 7.05: Unrecoverable error, exit code 1

and xfig gives me:

[]$ xfig test.eps
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-times-medium-r-normal--16-*-*-*-*-*-*-*,-*-*-medium-r-normal--16-*-*-*-*-*-*-*,*--16-*" to type FontSet

Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-times-medium-r-normal--16-*-*-*-*-*-*-*,-*-*-medium-r-normal--16-*-*-*-*-*-*-*,-*-*-*-r-*--16-*-*-*-*-*-*-*" to type FontSet

Does anyone know what the problem is?

Cheers,

Mark

it looks like there is already text in the file using the font times medium and you system does not have it installed you may try opening it in Inkscape which is designed to edit vector eps files, Inkscape should warn you that the font is missing but should still open it allowing you to change the font and the text. Inkscape also has the ability to add text to the image.
