How to add logical partitions in linux ?

Hi,

I am new to linux and would like to add a new a few logical partitions.I have a dual boot machine with win/linux.I resized a windows drive and using partition manager formatted it to make it "ext2" type of disk. The size of this new partition is about 5GB.

Now I went to linux and ran this command fdisk -l.Here is the output.

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 1797 14434371 c Win95 FAT32 (LBA)
/dev/hda2 1798 1810 104422+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda3 1811 2003 1550272+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda4 2004 4864 22980982+ f Win95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/hda5 2004 3404 11253501 83 Linux
/dev/hda6 3405 3469 522081 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda7 3470 3981 4112608+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda8 3982 4111 1044193+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda9 4112 4749 5124703+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda10 4750 4864 923706 83 Linux

I think the new partition is

/dev/hda9 4112 4749 5124703+ 83 Linux

I want to use this partition in linux environment to add a few logical partitions of various sizes like
a) 101 Mb
b) 26 Mb

How can I do this ?

Thanks,
Copernicus

/dev/hda9 is already a logical partition within the extended partition /dev/hda5. As are all of /dev/hda6-10. If you need to break these up further without repartitioning w/fdisk, you could you LVM.

For more information on LVM see http://www.cliftonlabs.com/LDP/HOWTO...WTO/index.html or your local mirror of the LDP.

You can only create partitions from unallocated space. You can use the app GNU parted to move, resize existing partitions.

The maxium number of partitions that you can have in linux I believe is 16.
