How does desktop background change without being selected?

I am running a dual boot (suse 9.2 and Windows xp) on a Toshiba laptop (pentium 4, 2.8 mHz). After leaving the box on to run antivirus software on the Windows side last night, this morning I shut it down and restarted linux. When it came up, I was greeted with a new background and when I went to desktop configuration it showed the name of the sunset picture I was using to still be the active background. The new background is bright emerald green with embossed fawns, frogs and penguins. Looking thru the list of available backgrounds, I found the root-logo and KDE box now have this same green background. If anyone can shed any light on what may have happened, please do so. I haven't been able to figure it out and being a relatively new user (approx. 1 year) could use some help to determine if my box has been compromised.

The filename may be the same while the contents of the file is different. Use gimp or some other graphics program to display the picture and see if it is the same as it used to be.

Thanks for the reply jailbait.

The sunset file no longer exists in the appropriate directory and yet desktop configuration still uses the name while displaying this green screen. Have never seen this screen before and is not a file I knowingly put on my box. I have searched all directories to no avail and the weirdest part is that it has integrated itself into three files.
