HOw do you use a Japanese keyboard in Linux

I have a Japanese keyboard, running on Mandrake 8.2. The fonts are set up, and the keyboard layout is set up properly. kinput2 is running, shift-space opens the kiput2 window. My problem is, how do I get the keyboard to start typing in Hiragana characters. Everything I read says to just type them after hitting shift-space, but it is just typing in the basic Latin Alphabet. Any tips?

Hi rtaft, are u using a English distribution or a Japanese one? If in English, you might need to export LANG=<your character code>, then start programs from that console. For me to input chinese, I have to do that.

PS. Thanks for helping me on the java thing.

As far as I know, there is one distrobution. I installed everything in Japanese. All the fonts work, keymap is right, I can get Japanese characters to appear by holding Shift-Zenkouho-NUMBER where NUMBER is a number. These characters appear to be Katakana, and not the Hiragana displayed on the keyboard. THis is what I'm having trouble with.
