Question How do you rebuild a kernel?

I've got to add a patch to my kernel that requires rebuilding the kernel... I was told to go to the usr/src directory and issue the patch: patch -p0 < [patch-file-name-here] With the kernel source in the working directory and then to rebuild the kernel... How do I rebuild the kernel?

What distribution are you using?

You specify 'any' in your profile and that's not too helpfull.

Different distributions have different mechanisms to get the source code. What's more, different distributions include different kernel patches (That's part of the added value of each distribution).

e.g. Fedora is an RPM. For Gentoo you get it when you are installing, other distros use the pristine official kernel, etc.

So in theory you could grab any kernel and put it into any distro, but then you would have to recompile everything. I don't think you want to do that.

I'm using Turbo Linux... it's Red Hat based.... likes rmps... etc. I don't mind recompiling from scratch as long as somebody can help me with the optimization flags for a P3-M 1.13ghz (IBM Laptop - Turbo Linux 10F - 2.6.0)

I did a quick search for 'Trubolinux kernel source' and I found this

http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat...o%20Linux.html

I would recommend doing a google search before asking in the forum. It may save you a lot of time waiting for a response.

Ok, and bear in mind that patches are usually 'version specific', meaning that you have to apply the patch that corersponds to your kernel.
