How do you disable gnome themes on other apps?/Emacs distorted over ssh

I sometimes need to log into my college's cs system to work on projects, and use emacs. The problem is there is white background at varoius parts of the editor (on lines before code, sparadically throughout other parts). In KDE, I was able to get rid of it by disabling kde theme usage on all applications. Is there any way to do this in Gnome, for just this application, or globally if necessary?
