How do you "chroot in" ???

hello all,

I have lately been unable to boot into my mepis linux install. I have mounted the partition from another linux install and looked around and all the data is intact.

I was told to do the following to try and fix it. Boot up live mepis cd or system rescue cd, the 'chroot into' my mepis partition and type the following 'mount -t proc proc/proc' and then run 'lilo'.

Well i booted up w/system rescue, mount the mepis partition at /mnt/hda1 then if i type 'chroot /mnt/hda1' it says /bin/zsh/ : file or dir does not exist, if i add a forward slash to it like this 'chroot /mnt/hda1/' , it gives me a permission denied error.

As i am a novice user (2months) i am not sure if i am correctly using the chroot command, if i need to add some to it or what. I would greatly appreciate any help with 'chroot' ing in.

thanks alot,
Boutros

You should specify the shell to use when chrooting. Bash is the default shell, so this is usually how it's done: chroot /mnt/hda1 /bin/bash, usually followed by source /etc/profile to pick up the $PATH and other environment variables.
