man tar

gives you all the instructions you'll ever need.
you can also always view the man pages here as well..

bunzip then untar

Actually you can usually eliminate the bunzip and just use tar to do it all at once like this :

tar -Ixvf /path/to/archive.tar.bz

But might not work in all cases though..
