How Do I Use Scim?
I've been trying to use Scim because I was told it can type in various different languages, but so far I've had no luck on using it.
Does anyone know how to configure it (GUI or Terminal) to type in the language I would like it to (Korean)? |
This is covered in ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/slackware/s..._AND_HINTS.TXT
But you should consider using another app, such as iBus, because SCIM has not been maintained upstream in a couple of years, and it does not look like Slackware will have a maintainer for it. |
Well, the Korean language hasn't really changed in all that time, so it doesn't matter what I use but I would like to use scim to try and learn it.

It has nothing to do with the Korean language. The software you use is
not always written without bugs. It also has dependencies on other software that is also not written without bugs. These software packages need updates for security, and they also need to have patches when other software they depend on are changed. In the last release of Slackware SCIM would segfault and needed some patches. That time I supplied them: Code:
ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/slackware/slackware64-13.37/ChangeLog.txt change to iBus in the future; unless someone wants to maintain SCIM, which no longer has any maintainer. Just follow the directions in the link given before. If you still have problems, then post back what you did and what your specific error message is then. |
Alright, thanks!

Okay, I've decided to stick with Scim despite the fact that right now it's insecure. If Slackware does switch to iBus, I will too.
However, for the life of me I cannot figure out how to use scim even after reading CHANGES_AND_HINTS.txt, so I'm still wondering if anybody has used it before, and may know how to help me with this situation. |
Please post what you have done and what does not work.

As CHANGES_AND_HINTS.txt said to, I left en_US the way it was for root, and simply only added utf-8 for my own profile.
Then, in scim setup I put the Keyboard Layout as English (American), and under Global Setup in IMEngine, I unchecked everything except Korean. Shouldn't it be switching to Korean when I do Ctrl + Space (that's what the Trigger is set on under Global Settings in FrontEnd). |
Bump for help.
