How do I create a slim virtual appliance?

I'm using vmware server on Linux and I already created some virtual machines. I want to be able to create vm for use on Windows. Do i just use the folders under "Virtual Machines" and try playing it using vmware player on a win box? The virtual appliances that are on the related vmware site are pretty small (3GB) I made my own indicating a 40GB...does that matter? When i looked at the virtual Fedora standard install the disk says it is an 8-9GB disk, but when selecting all the files for the player...it was only 3GB total. How can I get my own vm down to that size? What files are really needed? It seems like the .vmdk files aren't needed since, but when i attempt to play the vm without the .vmdk files, it complains. Any help would be great....tia...

There is an option in VMware to use only the HD space necesary (not reserve all the space of the "virtual partition"). You have to copy all the files... some are logs and not essential (but doesn't take up much space).

Do you know if you can create a vmware image from an existing server? I'd rather not try to remember all chnages made on a server since it was born.
