How do I build a x86_64 kernel?

I selected the "Opteron/Athlon64/Hammer/K8" in the kernel configuration (2.6.21) and also manually specified CONFIG_X86_64=y in the .config file, but the build process compiles the arch/i386 folder and not the arch/x86_64 folder. The final bzImage also ends up in arch/i386 folder.

Why can't I build a x86_64 kernel?

Have you tried installing the one from arch/i386 and check it with something like uname to see if it really is x86 and not x86_64?

What kind of machine are you building the kernel on? Do you have an x86-64 gcc on this system? I believe you can only build an x86-64 kernel on an x86-64 system unless you have a cross compiler.

Yes, I've been trying to build a cross-compiler (gcc), too, with no luck yet.
